THE PARKER
FELLOWSHIP
A TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS
ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
The Eric Parker Travelling Scholarship in Architecture was established
in 2000 with the intention of selecting and supporting an undergraduate
student of Architecture, enrolled at the University of Newcastle,
to undertake a programme of travel and architectural encounter reflecting
their own professional vision.
In 2010, the award was renamed The Parker Fellowship to better
reflect the vision and intent of the award and the strong bond between
The Architecture Foundation and the growing number of award recipients.
Importantly, this unique award is not a prize for the best academic
student in Architecture. It is awarded to the applicant showing
the greatest potential to benefit.
By way of The Architecture Foundation, the award is supported
by a number of architectural practices whose directors are graduates
of the University of Newcastle.
These include Suters Architects, E.J.E. Architecture and Killen
and Doran, all major practices in Newcastle. Financial support also
comes from practices in Sydney, including Rice Daubney and from
countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, USA and Britain and Europe
where early Newcastle graduates, who were students of Eric Parker,
are now senior members of the architectural profession. The award
also enjoys corporate support from the building industry, consulting
engineers and a variety of professional and commercial organisations
which maintain annual sponsorship and support by way of The Architecture
Foundation.
The Parker Fellowship in Architecture is an official scholarship
of the University of Newcastle and the annual scholarship funds
are held in trust by the University until each award is made.
In 2010, the value of the award is $10,000.00.
Each scholar is required, upon return, to complete formal studies
at the University of Newcastle and disseminate experiences and acquired
knowledge to colleagues, staff, the student body of the School,
the architectural profession and the wider community. Each scholar
is also invited to speak about their travel experiences at The Architecture
Foundation annual dinner, following their return.
There have been nine awards made since 2001 and the 2009 award
recipient was announced on 9 September at the 2009 dinner. The events
leading to the 2010 award are now under way.
